Bury St Edmunds Poppy Appeal 2009

The people of Bury St Edmunds have again shown their generosity and care for our service and ex-service community by giving more generously than ever. The total monies collected for the Poppy Appeal this year is in excess of £43,000, a magnificent result and a record in Bury St Edmunds. Our grateful thanks go to the Poppy Appeal Organiser and Treasurer, the volunteer collectors and all those who helped make this possible.

After many years of valiant service John Hibberd has sadly and reluctantly had to retire from the office of Poppy Appeal Treasurer. We thank him and his wife Shiela, who helped make the appeal such a great success, for their sterling work over the years.

Poppy Appeal Collectors

Poppy Appeal collection days this year run from October 30th to November 13th. We need volunteers during this period to spend just a few hours collecting at various locations in the town. You don’t have to be a member to help this very worthiest of causes. If you can spare a little of your time to help us please contact our Poppy Appeal Organiser, Mr Dick Palmer, on 01284 753893.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
